Transportation services index falls
for first time since February
WASHINGTON. DC — The Transportation Services Index (TSI) fell 0.6 percent in October to 110.9 (2000=100) from the September level of 111.6, turning down to its lowest level since February after two months of increases, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reports. BTS, a part of DOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, reported that the October level of 110.9 for the combined freight and passenger index was 1.4 percent higher than the October 2004 level of 109.4. The October level was 11.4 percent higher than the October level of the base year of 2000. TSI is a single seasonally adjusted index of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline, and local transit. The index includes historic data from 1990 to the present. The TSI is still under development and is considered experimental. The index measures changes from the monthly average of the base year of 2000. Release of November numbers is scheduled for Feb. 6. The TSI for freight fell 0.4 percent to 111.3 in October from the September level of 111.8, falling for the fourth time in five months to its lowest level since December 2004. The October 2005 level of 111.3 is 1.0 percent higher than the October 2004 level of 110.2. The TSI for passengers fell 1.1 percent to 109.7 in October from the September level of 110.9, turning down after a one-month increase. The October 2005 level of 109.7 is 2.3 percent higher than the October 2004 level of 107.2. During the six months ending in October, the TSI fell 0.6 percent, the Freight TSI fell 1.1 percent and the Passenger TSI rose 0.4 percent.
